Phonics

At Christ the King Catholic Academy the phonics scheme – Read Write Inc is used to facilitate daily Phonic sessions up to Year 3. Phonics has been a key focus in recent years and has resulted in an increase in the number of pupils passing the Year 1 Phonic screening. Professional Development is being offered this year to members of staff who have moved year groups so that they can deliver quality Phonic sessions and continue to improve the percentage of children passing the Year 1 screening. Support for parents from the Ruth Miskin scheme – Read Write Inc can be found on their website : http://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents/

Guided reading sessions take place daily at our school and children receive at least one session per week depending on their need. Money has been spent on quality guided reading books. Our new library and book areas along the main school corridor actively encourage pupils to take a book and enjoy reading it.

Children take home books daily and there are various incentives within classes to promote this. Children take home books to share at home from a variety of different schemes. Oxford Reading Tree is the main scheme used but is supplemented by a variety of other “real” books to ensure that pupils read broadly. All of our books are “banded” using the National Book Banding scheme to ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged by the texts and books they are reading.

The children continue with the scheme until they are confident, independent readers at which point they are encouraged to choose a book from the class library to read both in the classroom, and at home.

If you wish to find out more about the phonics and reading provision within our school please contact the school office and make an appointment with our Read Write Inc Leader – Mr. Daniel Flannigan-Salmon.
